Effects of Climate Change

We've all heard about climate change and their effects have been increasingly felt in recent years. When it comes about climate change, we generally think of high temperatures. But these are not the only effects. Tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts, rising sea levels and floods, tropical storms, melting glaciers, soil erosion are also among them.

Regarding high temperatures ranging between the years 1998 - 2013, showed a significant increase in the year 2010, it being the warmest. On that year, thousands of wild fires were recorded across the world, including in Siberia.

Gradually extreme weather settled worldwide: drought in some parts of the world and massive flooding in others. All this has had a significant impact on ecosystems and agriculture, many crops were destroyed partially or totally.

Dust storms had a negative impact on agriculture, but they also spread disease and pollution.

Flooding began to be increasingly common in recent years and they affected thousands of people worldwide. An example of this are the floodings from Zhejang Province, China, in June 2011, in which over a million people were evacuated and destroyed almost all crops. Pakistan Floods of 2010 also recorded damage of 43 million dollars.

Another effect of climate change is desertification. It currently affecting countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

And here we come to one of the most popular effects: melting of ice caps and glaciers. Both are important in the regulation of temperature, they are limiting the heat absorption and also the reflection of sunlight (the so-called albedo). Melting glaciers may also increase sea levels, and the extinction of many species of animals: polar bears, seals, pinguins etc.

About Geocaching

I heard about Geocaching long time ago ... But I have never practiced, only I had read about it. Until this year ... and I was very pleased, I really became passionate about this game.

Next, I will continue to tell you a few words about Geocaching. This is a game that consists of finding "boxes" called geocaches. Geocaches (containers with airtight) also containing a pen and a notebook called logbook, can be found after the game buffs geographical coordinates, which are recorded on the website www.geocaching.com . So GPS certainly should not miss.

Geocaches are placed all over the world. According to the website www.geocaching.com , there are 2,201,434 of geocaches and 6 million of geocachers on this planet.

Inside caches, besides a logbook and a pen we can also find the so called Travel Bug or Geocoin that can be moved from one box to another and can travel from one country to another to achieve a goal, their path being monitored online.

I hope I have made you really curious and I hope I have determined on you to try this game in the nearly future!

Despre Geocaching

Assan's Mill - part of Romanian Historical and Industrial Heritage

Today we won't focus on life and nature, but we will talk about the historical and cultural heritage, which in turn requires also conservation. And I thought that the best example of this is Assan's Mill in Bucharest, Romania -  an important cultural objective, which  is currently derelict .

We all wonder why no one has taken any action in this regard all these years, why such an  important historical monument is not restored ? Assan's Mill represents our past, so our history ...

An year ago, I decided to make a visit to this heritage building. I knew it only from pictures ... a magnificent building, so beautiful... But it was unbelievable what I found there: a derelict building, with collapsed walls, a bunch of bricks and iron.

To learn more about the cultural importance of this objective is to briefly recount its history.

Assan's Mill was built in 1853 by merchant George Assan. Today it is a monument of national importance and is part of our cultural and industrial heritage. This mill is the first steam mill in Romania and is located in Bucharest, Obor area. It is said that the steam engine, which weighed about 8,000 pounds, traveled eight weeks, being commissioned by the particular merchant in Vienna. In the early twentieth century, the business has expanded, Assan family's factories were offering a wide range of oils and varnishes .

Unfortunately, in 1948, Assan's Mill was nationalized by the Communists, and its owner killed . The mill has lost its fame, becoming only a left place, but full of history.

Nowadays it is in an advanced stage of degradation, mainly due to two fires that took place here: in May 2008 and June 2012, but also due to a roof that collapsed in January 2012, because of the construction materials' thiefs that affected the resistance structure. Currently, Assan's Mill is only a roof for homeless people.

The Legends of medicinal plants: Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) and Mint (Mentha piperita)

Today we will continue our story about medicinal plants with two new species: cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) and peppermint (Mentha piperita).

Latin name of Cornflower - Centaurea cyanus, plants expressing "softness", may be associated with the names of creatures half man - half horse from Thessaly, Greece - the legendary centaurs. Centaurs were remarked by the struggle they had with lapiths at Piritou's wedding, the latter banishing these creatures out of Mount Tessaly.

Cornflower plants whose petals are a piercing blue, belong to the botanical family Asteraceae and are used as a diuretic to treat kidney disease and as an astringent. From them you can use the flowers.

Cornflower is Estonia's national plant since 1968 and also the symbol of several political parties of  Estonian, Finnish and Swedish nationality.

The sad story of nymph Menta begins in a time long gone, when Hades, god of the Underworld fell in love with her. Hades' wife, Persephone, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, because of the pain that Hades caused her, changed Menta into a mint plant with the same name, but made sure that it endure forever and heal diseases.

Mint, that belongs to the family Labiatae, has remarkable healing properties, from her you can use leaves. It is used as an antiemetic, antispasmodic tract, as a stimulant and tonic, and to treat pyloric spasms. Mentha piperita L. is widely cultivated plant, ruderal species is Mentha arvensis L.
