Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve, Santana, Madeira

Rocha do Navio Nature Reserve is located in the north of  Madeira Island, in the municipality of Santana. It was founded in 1997 on the initiative of the local community. In translating "Rocha do Navio" means "Ship Rock". This name is given because of a shipwreck  of a Dutch Ship that was discovered in the area, but also due to the specific ship shape of the cliffs.

The Nature Reserve has an area of 1710 hectares and includes many rare and endemic species of plants specific to the Macaronesian coasts. An example of this is Juniperus turbinata ssp canariensis, a rare specie of  tree in the area. Rocha do Navio is also a paradise in terms of fish fauna, this place being recommended for scuba diving.

The protected area was also declared a Natura 2000 Site.
